Once In a Lifetime

Coming up with topics for weekly posts can be challenging. (This is number 261)

I try to stay a few weeks ahead to allow ideas to ripen. Nevertheless, every once in a while, I find myself behind the eight ball.

Like now.

So, rather than serving up green bananas, I’ll offer a poem.

Next week, I’ll share the 5th annual edition of my favorite quotes of the year.

Hopefully you’re enjoying Thanksgiving leftovers!

Once In A Lifetime

(With a tip of the hat to Bryan Eno and Talking Heads)

Strangely, I’ve begun smelling time.

 Faintly at first,

But it’s getting stronger.

A spell has come over me.

Not like turning 30, 40, or even 50.

But a sense of not being who I am

The mirror brings fake news.

In truth, I haven’t changed.

My life is a mash-up,

of youth and time.

 I watch this charade

with one part curiosity,

one part amusement,

and two parts incredulity.

My talking head screams,

“This is not my beautiful house,

This is not my beautiful wife!”

And I find myself asking,

“How did I get here?”

“Same as it ever was,”

screams the ages,

once in a lifetime.
